What Are Spider Veins?

These are small, dilated veins seen frequently on the thighs, around the knees, on the calves, and around the ankles.

Why Do I Get Them?

They represent a dilation of surface vessels secondary to increased pressure in the deeper veins. They often present during or after pregnancy and there seems to be a genetic propensity to get them as well. If your mother has them, you risk of developing them is higher.

How Can They Be Treated?

Sclerotherapy is a proven method of eliminating spider veins. This procedure involves injecting a "sclerosing agent" into the small veins. Larger varicose veins are not as responsive to this treatment and often require surgical removal by a surgeon.

Is Sclerotherapy For Me?

The majority of persons who have sclerotherapy performed will see partial or complete disappearance of the unsightly veins. Unfortunately, approximately 10% of patient will have poor to fair results (lack of total disappearance after six treatments). In very rare instances, the patient's condition may even worsen with treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I need?

The number differs from patient to patient, depending on the severity of the condition. One to six treatments may be needed, the average is two to four. Individual veins usually require one to three treatments.

What Are The Most Common Side Effects?

  1. Itching. Depending on the type of solution used, you may experience mild itching along the vein route. This itching normally lasts one to two days.

  2. Temporary Darkening of the Skin. Approximately 30% of patients notice light brown streaks in the area after treatment. This may persist for up to 4-12 months.

  3. Sloughing. Less than 3% of patients will experience small ulcerations in the skin at the injection sites. A small blister may form and open but will heal over in time usually leaving no visible scar.

  4. Allergic Reactions. Rarely a patient may have an allergic reaction to the sclerosing agent. This is more common with certain agents more than with others.

  5. Pain. A few patients may experience mild to moderate pain and some bruising, usually at the site of the injection. The veins may be tender after treatment, and an uncomfortable sensation may run along the course of the vein. This pain is usually temporary, lasting on to at most seven days. Some patients also experience some cramping during the procedure similar to a "charlie horse".

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

It is very important for every patient to understand their role in assuring the most successful outcome. The most critical part of treatment comes after the procedure. This includes the wearing of compression stockings for 6-12 weeks. For localized areas an ace wrap may be used instead. Once the veins have been sclerosed,  keeping them compressed helps to ensure a better outcome. Because compression stockings may be hot to wear, having the procedure done in the Fall or Winter may be preferable.
