    Osteoporotic Bone

reprinted from Dempster DW et al, J Bone Miner Res 1:15-21, 1986

Osteoporosis is a common disease which results in softening of the bones as we age. It is most common in women but occasionally occurs in men. It is closely associated with sex hormones such as estrogen (women) and testosterone (men) and as such is often associated with menopause or testicular dysfunction in men. When the bones become soft enough, fractures can occur with minimal or even no trauma. Fractures of the hip and spine in the elderly are a consequence of osteoporosis.

Major risk factors include:

bulletEstrogen deficiency
bulletTestosterone deficiency
bulletLong term use of corticosteroids
bulletHyperparathyroidism
bulletRheumatoid arthritis
bulletAdvancing age
bulletHistory of fractures associated with minimal trauma

Additional risk factors:

bulletsmoking
bullettoo much alcohol
bullettoo little exercise
bullettoo little calcium
bulletprevious broken bone that resulted from a minor injury
bulletcertain medications such as steroids or too much thyroid hormone
bulletpremature menopause before 45 years of age
