It is most common in women but occasionally occurs in men. It is closely associated with sex hormones such as estrogen (women) and testosterone (men) and as such is often associated with menopause or testicular dysfunction in men. When the bones become soft enough, fractures can occur with minimal or even no trauma. Fractures of the hip and spine in the elderly are a consequence of osteoporosis. Major risk factors include:
